The making of the Sinai Covenant, also known as the Mosaic Covenant, is described in the book of Exodus in the Bible. It was a significant event in the history of the Israelites and marked their formal agreement with God. The stages followed in the making of the Sinai Covenant are as follows:

  1. Arrival at Mount Sinai: The Israelites arrived at Mount Sinai after leaving Egypt [1]. They encamped at the foot of the mountain [1].

  2. God's Announcement and Agreement: God announced His intention to covenant with Israel, and the people agreed to enter into this covenant [1]. God reminded them of what He had done for them, bringing them out of Egypt [3]. He promised to make them His treasured possession, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation [3].

  3. Preparations: Prior to the third day, Moses instructed the people to consecrate themselves and wash their clothes [1]. They were to be ready by the third day, as the Lord would come down on Mount Sinai [3]. Moses marked a boundary at the foot of the mountain to prevent anyone from approaching it [3].

  4. Manifestation of God's Presence: On the third day, there was thunder, lightning, a thick cloud, and a very loud trumpet blast [3]. The whole mountain trembled, and it was covered with smoke, as the Lord descended on it in fire [3]. The people witnessed these powerful manifestations of God's presence [3].

  5. Giving of the Law: Moses went up the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments from God [3]. These commandments would serve as the foundation of the covenant [2]. Moses then came back down and shared the laws and ordinances with the people [3]. The people responded with one voice, saying, "All the words which the Lord has spoken we will do" [3].

  6. Ratification of the Covenant: Moses wrote down the words of the Lord and built an altar with twelve pillars, representing the twelve tribes of Israel [2]. Young men offered burnt offerings and peace offerings [2]. Moses collected the blood from the sacrifices and sprinkled half of it on the altar, signifying God's involvement in the covenant [2]. He then read the book of the covenant to the people, and they agreed to obey [2]. Finally, Moses sprinkled the remaining blood on the people, symbolizing their involvement in the covenant [2].

The making of the Sinai Covenant was a significant event in the history of the Israelites. It established their relationship with God and provided them with a set of laws and commandments to guide their lives.
